Satanic Thrill Kill Suspect Delays Sawyer Co. Trial Again

SAWYER COUNTY, Minn.,.-A man accused of killing a 94-year-old Radisson woman for the thrill of it will have his case delayed again.

FOX 21's Jacob Kittilstad was the only TV reporter in the courtroom to follow the legal proceedings for the 29-year-old who allegedly yelled things about Satan while stabbing his victim 17 times.

"She was 94-years-old, you know?” Marianne Muellner said about her deceased mother, Irena Roszak.

“Maybe she would have another year to live, maybe she wouldn't but that's not the point. The point is that he took the life,” Muellner said.

She speaks of Christopher Roalson, the man who allegedly killed Roszak in May 2009.

For years, she says she has sat in Sawyer County Courtrooms for closure.

Now, she says she will wait even longer after a request from Roalson.

"The motions; there was some information in there that was inaccurate and beforehand there was some information that I also found to be inaccurate," Roalson said during a plea hearing Monday.

Roalson, unhappy with his current attorney, Mark Mullen, asked for a lawyer switch.

Last week, behind closed doors, a settlement was reached in the case, Sawyer County Judge Kenneth Kutz said.

That is until Roalson abruptly changed his mind along with his lawyer.

"I have a lot to lose on this,” Roalson said. “So, at least, I think I should have somebody there who I can trust. Do you know what I mean?"

This will be Roalson's third attorney change of this case. The public defender's office does accommodate these requests but only on a sliding scale.

For a misdemeanor, public defenders allow one attorney change. For a felony, it's two. Homicide allows for three changes.

But, for first degree intentional homicide, Roalson's charge yielding the highest penalty in Wisconsin's law book, there is a chance for even more, Kutz said.

Kutz reluctantly accepted the plan as it is a constitutional right.
